Debora and Aniata Kimitete

Advisers

Debora was elected the First Deputy of the Municipality of Nuku Hiva in the Marquesan islands in 2003 following the tragic disappearance in a plane of her husband, Lucien, the Mayor of Nuku Hiva and local assembly representative of French Polynesia. Since then, she has held a number of senior positions, including as President of the environmental association Te Kua o Te Henua Enana and as Vice President of the cultural association Te Hina O Motu Haka. Her daughter Aniata is a graduate of the University of French Polynesia in Tahiti and also studied as an Erasmus student in the UK. Debora and Aniata are passionate about Marquesan cultural heritage and have been an integral part of its renaissance. They are equally passionate about protecting the environment. They work as guides to help visitors understand and appreciate the Marquesan islands' history, sacred sites, arts, crafts, music, dance, language, festivals, patutiki (traditional tattooing), costumes and connection with the ocean and mountains around them.
